Sony Ericsson W980i: Shake, Rattle, Song!

The W980i is the latest music phone from Sony Ericsson. The phone is of clamshell design and is basically the same thing we get from previous Walkman phones but with two updated features.

The first feature is the shake recognition via the built in accelerometer. I wrote about how these small pieces of hardware are going to change the way we use mobile phones - and yes, they are being implemented in creative ways with current mobile handsets. You can shake the W980i while pressing the Walkman key to skip to the next track.

The second feature of the W980i is the Track ID, something which I talked about here and is also being implemented as a feature called SongID with the new Motorola ROKR E8.

Apart from these features, the Sony Ericsson W980i will ship with HSDPA connectivity, video calling capabilities, and FM tuner.

Sony Ericsson T303: Mass market slider elegance!

I’ve just had an epiphany. When we talk of “entry level phones” in 2008, we’re referring to phones that don’t have expansion slots. So looks and features are really givens in today’s entry level market. The Sony Ericsson T303 comes with a 1.3MP camera, FM radio, Bluetooth and music playback software. These are, in essence, the bare essentials you would expect to find in any phone nowadays. There are versions for Europe as well as Asia, differentiating only with an “a” or “c” naming convention.

P.S. Here’s an observation. Notice the T303’s default wallpaper? Looks a lot like the default designs of one of the previous Nokia fashion phone lines. The one where they used squares with rounded edges. Anyone remember those models?

Sony Ericson K810i brings not much inovations in compairing to K800i, but if you`r a Sony Ericson lover and you don`t need a better camera than this with 3,2 megapixels – just forward to the next shop and buy it! But if you alredy have a K800i, you don`t need this

Sony Ericsson 2Q profit rises 54 percent

Sony Ericsson, the world's fourth-largest mobile phone maker, said Thursday its net profit rose 54 percent in the quarter ended June 30, as it expanded its market share with low and mid-range phones.

The company, a joint venture between Sweden's LM Ericsson and Japan's Sony Corp., said net profit rose to 220 million euros ($303 million) from 143 million euros. Revenues grew 37 percent in the second quarter to 3.1 billion euros ($4.3 billion) from 2.3 billion euros in the same period a year ago.

Sales in the quarter were boosted by a 59 percent rise in handset shipments to 24.9 million from 15.7 million the previous year.

The London-based mobile phone maker said its global market share grew to more than 9 percent during the quarter, an increase of around 3 percentage points from a year ago.

The company expects to keep expanding its market share this year, Sony Ericsson President Miles Flint said in a statement.

"We expect the market in 2007 to remain competitive, but with recently announced products ... we aim to continue to grow faster than the market," he said.

Sony Ericsson expects the 2007 global market for mobile phones to be more than 1.1 billion units.

Samsung, Ericsson sign telecom cross license deal

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Sweden's Ericsson on Monday signed a mobile telecommunication cross license deal and agreed to drop ongoing patent suits between the two companies.

Samsung said in a filing with the Korea Exchange that the license deal covers "second-generation" and advanced "third-generation" mobile telecommunications patents the two companies hold, without providing details.

The 3G mobile standard is an improvement to digital but voice-centric 2G networks, enabling video calls and Internet on cell phones.

Telecoms equipment maker Ericsson had sued Samsung in February 2006 in Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States and expanded the suit in August, alleging infringements of its patents by Samsung. Samsung had also filed a counter-suit.

The legal dispute came after the two failed to renew a patent agreement that expired at the end of 2005.

Samsung declined on Monday to comment further about the patents in question, but a company official had previously said the suit covered mobile phone parts and some functions.

Samsung is the world's third-biggest maker of mobile phones behind Finland's Nokia and U.S. firm Motorola Inc. .
