Nokia N96 Review

It is becoming more and more difficult for current manufacturers to put a unique mobile phone into the market. Many cell phones are equal when it comes to their functionality, and there are only minor differences between current models and their successors. Unlike a few years ago, when mobile phones were gradually taking on more functionalities of other devices. These new models definitely made a difference at the time. The Nokia N95 brought fame to Nokia, which eventually resulted in the N95 8GB version. The same cell phone, in fact, only featuring a larger internal memory of 8GB, as the name already gives away, as well as a slightly bigger monitor and a different color than its predecessor. About the functions; the Nokia N95 already had excellent specifications, and the successor more and more often turns out to be approximately the same phone albeit with a different look. Up to now, Nokia did not introduce many mobile phones with a touch screen and perhaps the focus will be on these in the future.

One vital thing with any mobile phone is connectivity. This is a dual-band 3G phone with HSDPA support, quad-band GSM with GPRS and EDGE plus WiFi. The Nokia N96 supports stereo Bluetooth and high-speed USB 2.0. Sadly, the N96 lacks an FM transmitter, but the inclusion of a standard jack plug should help for in-car connectivity.

Design and Ergonomics
The company have been following a very monotonous design template as far as their multimedia smartphones are concerned, yet it can’t be called an unsuccessful one. The closest thing in appearance to the N96 is a N81, while N85 looks more elegant due to the rounded angles, a different plastic of a better quality. The overall size of the handset is rather modest, only making 103x55x18 mm, but the handset doesn’t give the hand a comfortable feel because of the width and the thickness, N85 openly wins the contest. On the other hand, it isn’t even nearly as bulky as Samsung i8510, the Korean flagship handset is really huge in an open state, the size being its chief weakest point.

Screen
The screen of Nokia N96 is identical to the screen N96 8GB, featuring the largest diagonal among all Nokias – 2.8’’, TFT, some of the best screen quality around. Compare this one to the screen of Nokia N85, powered by the AM-OLED technology. N85 is notable for much more vivid colors, yet the palette is more natural with N96, also the latter seems to display a better behavior in direct sunlight, bringing about less annoying glare. We can’t really say that the screen of N96 is worse than the N85 screen, it’s just in a way different.

Controls and Keyboard
The block of controls is remarkable for the use of dedicated media buttons, unlike N85 those are operable outside the player mode. You can use them to switch tracks or start/stop playback at any moment in any menu, which is immensely handy. The buttons aren’t of the touch kind, they are mechanical and very responsive, bringing no trouble at all.

A Navi Wheel is traditionally available, remaining active in all menus and lists. The sensitive area of the wheel is limited to a thin limbo running along the perimeter of the navigation element. Moving your finger clockwise or counter-clockwise allows for rapid playlist browsing in a corresponding direction. The light indicator sits right in the center of the Navi Wheel and can be easily turned off. It doesn’t carry out any special functions like a message or a call reminder, a feature still available on some older Nokia models.

Battery
Nokia N96 is equipped with a relatively old battery, the same with the original Nokia N95. It’s a BL-5F unit sporting a 950 mAh power output capacity. The choice is easily explainable: no higher capacity batteries were available when the development of N96 started, save for a few samples too big to fit into the battery bay. The existing battery is on a comparable size scale with the newer BL-5K battery (1200 mAh, used by Nokia N85), but is a bit smaller. Neither BL-5K nor BL-6F can fit into the battery bay of N96. Nevertheless, the smartphone can keep running for a long time regardless of the relatively low battery capacity, it can run longer than N95, and makes world records in media recording or playback modes. Not only Feature Pack 2 contributes to this, but mainly the power-saving STMicroelectronics chipset.

Connectivity
The availability of Wi-Fi also means the availability of the WLAN Wizard application, which essentially is a simple program intended to help the user to arrange network connections in a semi-automatic mode. There are but a few options, once a network is detected the user is prompted to submit a number of settings. Network filtering is available, the security standards include WEP, WPA and WPA2. The scanning period during which WLAN networks are searched and detected is also adjustable in the options.

Memory
Once the device has booted, the remaining amount of free memory available to the user is 90 Mb; the total RAM size equals to 128 Mb, which is quite an adequate score for a modern smartphone. Heap Size and Jar Size for Java applications are unlimited.

Software
Nokia N96 bases off the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 platform. A comprehensive review of the base functionality provided by the said platform is already available in a separate article on our site, so there’s no sense in duplicating the sentences in this one. The preinstalled service clients include an online music store, Share on OVI and so on – nothing overly surprising at all.

Multimedia
The player interface looks quite standard, exposing almost no difference from Nokia N85 or N78; the same interface is used by all latest devices basing off S60v3 Feature Pack 3. The extra controls come in handy, both the buttons around the navigation button and the extra buttons on the upper half of the slider are used for rewinding, playing and pausing. Here we have a huge advantage over Samsung i8510 which isn't equipped with any extra player buttons, a flaw which is hardly compensated by the unmatched audio quality provided by this model.

Gateway T-6828 Review

The T-6828 isn’t embarrassing to take out in public, and it doesn’t have a drab design like that of the Acer TravelMate 4720-6727 or the Fujitsu LifeBook A6120. Yet coating the exterior and palm rests with red paint is an old concept; the paint should have been applied with more imagination to have any real impact, given the interesting things that are happening in laptop design. Laptops like the HP Pavilion dv6500t and the Toshiba U405-S2830 are experimenting with decorative laminates, while the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 impresses consumers with a textured surface. Another problem is weight. This 14-inch laptop weighs 5.7 pounds, as much as the 15.4-inch HP dv6500t. Gateway would have been better off going with a 13-inch form factor, as many manufacturers are currently doing.

The 14-inch screen is very pleasant to look at, but it has the modest 1,280-by-800 resolution found in many inexpensive laptops. By contrast, the Dell Inspiron 1420 gives you the option of a 1,440-by-900 resolution. The mouse buttons, like those of the Gateway M-152XL, make a noise that’s noticeable in a quiet setting, but I really enjoyed typing on the keyboard. Above the keyboard, the river of multimedia buttons is another example of how Gateway is falling behind in terms of design. Touch-sensitive buttons would have been a better choice, as they are much easier to press.

These days a company—especially one that’s not at the top of market—needs to throw in more in the way of features than people would normally expect. Yet with the T-6828, Gateway gives you just enough to get by. For instance, it omitted an HDMI port to cut down on costs. The T-6828 also lacks a FireWire port and an S-Video-out. The three USB ports and dual-layer DVD burner are no better than average for a 14-inch laptop. The T-6828 gives you 250GB worth of storage, but I can’t really applaud Gateway for this, because adding storage capacity is cheap these days. Lenovo, by contrast, went the extra mile with its Y510 by offering a five-speaker system with a subwoofer. (The T-6828’s speakers are decent, but ordinary.) The only thing that makes the T-6828 stand out is its two-year warranty, since the extra year alone is typically worth over $100.

ASUS P527 Smartphone

Although ASUS doesn’t come out with phones as often as the big players do, they seem to have some sort of cult following, not as zealous as Mac users pray tell, but zealous nonetheless. The P527 is jam packed with features — although it doesn’t have next gen HSDPA technology built in, it still makes up with 802.11g wireless Internet, 2MP camera, MP3 and multimedia functions, and an office suite solution for only USD $420.00.

HTC Diamond: Not in the rough?

HTC, formerly just another one of those OEM’s have gone a long way. After releasing such devices as the HTC Touch a mere hours before the iPhone, HTC is back with a new winner - the HTC Diamond.

From a technical perspective, the HTC Diamond offers an ultra bright high definition glass touch screen and a fluid user interface. Yes, it looks like the dawn of the iPhone competitors has reached its peak ladies and gentlemen. The smartphone is meant first and foremost for browsing the Internet and HTC did a good job of overlaying their own UI platform above Windows Mobile. This is a similar “hack” which they did with the Touch and since I’ve played with one, I am confident that HTC will make UI navigation much simpler and less “corporatey” with the traditional Windows Start screen.

In a nutshell: the HTC Diamond combines several great technologies to come up with one kick ass product. High definition screen, 3.2MP camera, WiFi, click wheel navigation ala iPod and “deck o’ cards” form factor are all in. The only con? Well it doesn’t seem to run on Google’s Android platform yet.

Samsung U900 Soul

Definitely a winner in design, Samsung has brought the “Soul” back into mobile phones. The Samsung U900, better known as the Soul is really an aesthetic play with the phone’s real estate. The directional keypad is a show off of Samsung’s DACP or Magic Touch Dynamic Active Control Panel. This basically turns the directional buttons into context sensitive fields for various functions. In terms of usability, the DACP has gone a long way since the time LG’s Chocolate phone launched with a rather blah keypad.

The Soul is packed! It comes with a 5MP camera with face recognition, Bang and Olufsen Ice Power speaker technology, and HSDPA. My only complaint is that the U900 doesn’t come with WiFi. A phone so packed with features should have had built in wireless Internet at the very least.

Samsung SGH F480 With Widgets

The interesting thing about the latter form is that the touch sensitive navigation is made of rubber for easier thumb gripping and scrolling. Ingenious really! This mode also pulls out the rich B&O speaker that’s dominant on the phone’s top.

LG KF600 Slider Touch Screen

The KF600 is a nifty slider equipped with a touch screen. What makes the KF600 nifty is that it comes with an InteractPad, a touch sensitive area located below the main screen that is context sensitive. This, in theory is a good idea because it allows the user to combine touch screen interactivity with the default keypad. Some phones only present one option to input data - the KF600 seems to be a marriage of two technologies. Looking good so far. Features-wise though, the KF600 doesn’t have smartphone functions so it is to be treated like a regular cellphone with MP3, video and call functions.

Sony Ericsson W980i: Shake, Rattle, Song!

The W980i is the latest music phone from Sony Ericsson. The phone is of clamshell design and is basically the same thing we get from previous Walkman phones but with two updated features.

The first feature is the shake recognition via the built in accelerometer. I wrote about how these small pieces of hardware are going to change the way we use mobile phones - and yes, they are being implemented in creative ways with current mobile handsets. You can shake the W980i while pressing the Walkman key to skip to the next track.

The second feature of the W980i is the Track ID, something which I talked about here and is also being implemented as a feature called SongID with the new Motorola ROKR E8.

Apart from these features, the Sony Ericsson W980i will ship with HSDPA connectivity, video calling capabilities, and FM tuner.

Nokia Morph: Not a phone

The future of mobile phones is this: there won’t be phones as we know it. Looking at the “future” as suggested by Nokia, the concept of the Morph goes way beyond mobile phone technology. Essentially speaking, a “phone” by definition today implies more than just making calls - there is a camera function, MP3 playback and web surfing. Pretty much, by design - a computer.

The Morph is the closest thing to a portable environmental suit: more than calls, it becomes a repository for otherwise useless information like pollution levels, smell analyzers and other such things that require the use of nanotechnology. it can help us locate places and people, be worn as a fashion accessory, and be folded up into something more portable.

The funny thing is that when I re-read what I just wrote, I’m basically describing phones as they already exist today (save for the smell analyzers and pollution level thingees). Cliche as it may sound, the future is not too far away, really.

Nokia 8800 Arte: Let’s make “arte” with leather

The Nokia 8800 Arte is the latest in Nokia’s fashion line. There are two available units, the Nokia 8800 Arte and the Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte, with the main difference being that the latter comes with a leather slider. In terms of features, aside from the elegance of both units as fashion phones, the Arte displays a status menu of the time and missed events by tapping the metal bar at the bottom of the screen. I’ve just had an epiphany. When we talk of “entry level phones” in 2008, we’re referring to phones that don’t have expansion slots. So looks and features are really givens in today’s entry level market. The Sony Ericsson T303 comes with a 1.3MP camera, FM radio, Bluetooth and music playback software. These are, in essence, the bare essentials you would expect to find in any phone nowadays. There are versions for Europe as well as Asia, differentiating only with an “a” or “c” naming convention.

P.S. Here’s an observation. Notice the T303’s default wallpaper? Looks a lot like the default designs of one of the previous Nokia fashion phone lines. The one where they used squares with rounded edges. Anyone remember those models?

Motorola Q 9h

An updated version to the first Q, the Q9h is Moto’s follow up to their “MotoBerry.” Motorola met up with me to show off some of the newer phones which were demo’ed at CES 2008. Now it’s the Q’s turn to shine. The main differences between this model and the previous Q is made apparent from the real estate. It sports a better use of space in the keyboard, utilizing the entire bottom half of the keypad for buttons. The Q runs on Windows Mobile 6 as well.

Nokia N78: A cheaper N82

Motorola may just leave the mobile phone business

Analysts say that Motorola may be destined to leave the mobile phone market. The last living would be an acquisition of a Chinese company (ie how moved to Lenovo IBM) to help fix things. Thing is, the Chinese have no idea what to do to fix Motorola, as reported by Richard Windsor of Nomura. Sad. Instead, Motorola will concentrate its efforts on other infrastructure projects, which is really his arm stronger.

I recall attending a press conference of Motorola, as they outlined their plans for government and private sector infrastructure development. These products include networking, solutions and WiMAX mesh radio system for calamities. These products seemed way too far and stable compared with what they were doing with their mobile phone division. I mean, what sold the RAZR is not the user interface - is the form factor that really did not follow with the passage of time through. New models consisted of new colors… and that was it.

Softbank has promised to respond to each competitor's price cut with its own in 24 hours.

DoCoMo's shares fell 2.3 per cent to Y170,000 on Friday, while rival KDDI's fell 3.2 per cent to Y810,000. The mobile telecoms battle intensified last October with a rule change allowing customers to switch carrier without switching number. This increased defections. DoCoMo has already acknowledged weakness in marketing by announcing a new "corporate branding" division, which groups the marketing department with related divisions. Sprint, Google in pact for WiMax mobile Web

Google Inc. has made its biggest move yet on the U.S. mobile Web market by signing a deal with Sprint Nextel Corp. that positions the Internet company to build services to run on Sprint's planned WiMAX high-speed wireless network. The two companies said on Thursday that Google will provide its Internet search service for a Web portal that Sprint is developing for the new WiMAX network. The gateway to various Web services will be ready in April 2008.

The deal is Google's closest alliance with a major U.S. mobile service provider.

While Google is the world's leading provider of Web search and has agreements with large mobile providers in Asia and Europe, analysts say it has lagged Yahoo Inc. in the U.S. wireless market. "This seems to be a bigger deal than what (Google's) done in the past, more comprehensive," said Pacific Crest analyst Steve Weinstein, who expects wireless services to be a "very material driver" for Google by late 2008 and early 2009.

Google has said wireless is key to growth and its strategy of selling Internet advertising.

Besides the deal with Sprint, Google is also lobbying the U.S. government to open up the wireless market and has expressed interest in bidding for airwaves at an upcoming government auction. It said it will spend a minimum of $4.6 billion if regulators push operators to open their networks.

The Sprint deal is expected to boost Web access over the new WiMAX network and expand use of Google's search and communications services on mobile devices.

Sprint said it would combine technology for detecting user location with Google tools including e-mail and chat.

For example, users could use Google to search for a pizzeria without having to enter a ZIP code, or have the phone automatically broadcast their whereabouts to friends when they are setting up a meeting using Google Talk instant chat service or e-mail on their phones.

The company blew away almost every analyst estimate for last quarter, a feat accomplished due to higher margins on iPod and Mac computer sales. Oh yeah, the iPhone helped too. Now, when AT&T released its numbers on Wednesday for iPhone activations, the figure came at the very very low end: 146,000 iPhones were activated in the first day and a half.

The actual number of iPhones purchased in the first two days, according to Apple, was 270,000 - the low-end of an expected range that came in anywhere from 200,000 to 700,000 units. The company also stated that sales of the mobile device would reach one million by the end of the first quarter after its release. One interesting fact of note was that sales of the iPhone did not harm sales of iPods. In the last quarter, Apple sold 9.8 million iPod mp3 players, a higher-than-expected number.

As for next quarter, Apple gave a quarterly guidance that seemed to be overly "cautious" - 65 cents a share vs analyst expectations of 83 cents a share.

It's understandable that Duke's network administrators were caught off guard. Dual-mode smartphones are seldom seen in the United States, mainly because cell carriers have blocked the technology for fear of eroding their cellular business (see "Cell Service Providers Get A Wake-Up Call").

The iPhone, released three weeks ago, seems to have changed that overnight. Research In Motion last week released its first dual-mode BlackBerry (not counting a Wi-Fi-only 2004 model), and Dell and Hewlett-Packard are jumping into the market, too.
"The iPhone has pushed all vendors to rapidly transition from basic limited-function cell phones to converged smart devices," says analyst Carmi Levy of AR Communications. "By the end of the year, you won't be able to get a basic cell phone from the major vendors."

My first impressions of the Nokia N76 phone: sleek and sweet.

The N76 is definitely much thinner than expected. It's a tad bit slimmer than your typical RAZR V3 phone. It's also noticeably longer than the RAZR.
I like the weight. It's heavy enough that it feels solid and has a nice heft, but light enough so that it's not a burden in your pocket. (the N80 is almost .7 ounces heavier)
Build quality is excellent. The N76 feels like a million bucks - you don't get that plastic feel associated with cheaper phones.
I'd have to call this Nokia's "densest" phone ever created - removing the back cover exposes the entire back housing, which is so tightly packed that Nokia barely found space to insert a SIM card.
Speaking of which, the process of removing the SIM card is a little odd - you have to pull a yellow tag which is connected to a small piece that holds the SIM card. Problem is the piece is completely removable (it's not connected to the phone in any way). Losing one of these would not be fun.

The flip opens and closes with a firm click. It's also pretty tight in terms of movement - you can't flip open the N76 with one hand very easily.

Music sound quality is good, but the stereo speakers are not quite on par with the N95's.

There's almost zero lag (post-processing?) after taking a picture. Wow. That's unheard of on any other Nokia phone I've used.

You can't exit the Music Player. This has got to be a bug.

The N76 keypad is responsive and provides pretty good feedback even though the buttons aren't raised. On the flip side, it's also easily smudged and covered with fingerprints. Can't win 'em all.

That idle mode blinking blue light is inobtrusively hidden by the mirrored surface (front flip), in contrast to the N80 where it was in-your-face and just flat out annoying.

The dedicated music buttons are actually useful, since they also control the camera options as well as the music player when the flip's closed.

Apple Inc.'s flashy new iPhones may be jamming parts of the wireless network at Duke University, where technology officials worked with the company Wednesday to fix problems before classes begin next month.

Bill Cannon, a Duke technology spokesman, said an analysis of traffic found that iPhones flooded parts of the campus' wireless network with access requests, freezing parts of the system for 10 minutes at a time.

A single iPhone was powerful enough to cause the problem, and there are 100 to 150 of them registered on the network, Cannon said. Network administrators have noticed the problem nine times in the past week.

"The scale of the problem is very small right now," said Cannon, adding that the school is working with Apple and Cisco Systems Inc., Duke's network equipment provider, to pinpoint the problem. "But the more iPhones that are around, the more they could be knocking on the door for access."

Fall classes resume in August at Duke, a private university in Durham.

The iPhone is Apple's first foray into the cellular phone business. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company released the product — which combines a cell phone, media player and wireless Internet device — at the end of June, with some consumers lining up outside stores days before the phones went on sale. The phones retail for $499 to $599.

The gadget can access the Internet through AT&T Inc.'s Edge network or through Wi-Fi. When a Wi-Fi hotspot is unavailable, it automatically switches to the slower network but continues to check for a Wi-Fi signal.

Ashok Agrawala, a computer science professor at the University of Maryland, speculated that both the phone and Duke's network are to blame for the glitches at the university. Agrawala said the phones could be struggling to regain a connection with a wireless access point, possibly when a wireless hotspot hands off to another.

"When you set up a network on the campus, you set up the network to accommodate the devices you have in use," Agrawala said, noting laptops as the primary users on college campuses. "Now with the popularity of the iPhones, the network parameters may not be set right."

But he added that the iPhone should be able to properly handle that problem without flooding the network. Agrawala said he also questions whether an iPhone is capable of accessing Duke's network 10,000 times a second, as found by the school's analysis.

Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman, said the company is working with Duke to quickly resolve the issue but didn't know details or its source.

The problem has generated discussion on Internet technology forums, but there have been no reports of other networks being affected. At Maryland, for example, officials said they hadn't seen anything like the problems at Duke.

Greg James, associate director of data networking at nearby North Carolina State University, said Wednesday that the school hasn't noticed any issues at its campus in Raleigh despite the usual monitoring of all wireless access points.

"We're keeping a close eye out to what happens at Duke and what they find," James said.

Qualcomm Inc.'s efforts to sell its mobile TV technology in Europe suffered a blow on Wednesday with the European Commission's indication that it will potentially forbid the use of the U.S. company's system.

The Commission said that it favors the use of a single mobile TV standard across Europe and that if necessary will mandate one. If it does decide to choose a single technology, the Commission will likely pick DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld), a standard that competes with Qualcomm mobile TV technology MediaFlo, it said.

"Currently in Europe, there is a risk of market fragmentation as there are several mobile TV technologies for different platforms," the Commission wrote in an FAQ about the report. DVB-H is the strongest contender for mobile TV, the Commission said, with about 40 worldwide pilots of the technology completed or in process.

"The Commission therefore considers that DVB-H will form the basis for successful introduction and take-up of terrestrial mobile TV services in the E.U. It will continue to monitor the situation in the E.U. and may come forward with proposals in 2008 including, if appropriate, making this open standard mandatory," the Commission said.

The Flo Forum, a group that supports Qualcomm's technology, criticized the decision, arguing that choosing only one permissible technology will stall the advancement of a healthy European mobile TV industry.

The forum also said that a mandate for mobile TV technologies can't be compared to a similar mandate that was issued in the cellular market. The GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) mandate happened after GSM was already being used and commercially successful, the group said.

In Europe, mobile operators were required to use the GSM standard, rather than choose between it and Qualcomm's CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology. The European mobile industry often cites that decision as the reason that the cellular market there is more advanced than markets like the U.S., where, they say, multiple incompatible technologies slow growth.

Qualcomm has since had a tumultuous relationship with Europe, even though its CDMA technology is now used in 3G systems there. In recent years, Qualcomm has begun expanding into new areas beyond CDMA, perhaps because it is unclear if the technology will be used in future generations of mobile phone systems. Such new areas, like mobile TV, offer the company an opportunity to do more business in Europe and around the world.

Motorola Inc. reported a second straight loss Thursday after another quarter of subpar sales, a $28 million deficit that raises pressure on the handset maker and CEO Ed Zander in what he acknowledged has been "a very difficult year."

The company promised financial improvement in its cell-phone division in the second half but steered clear of estimates after weak international sales contributed to back-to-back losses for the first time in five years.

Its hopes for recovery, on hold until next year, hinge on the reception of new phones like the Razr 2 and the Z8 that are just being shipped.

Some investors also are clamoring for the board of directors to replace Zander, whose 3 1/2-year run as chief executive has been tarnished by the company's botched sales strategy following two years of notable success linked to runaway sales of the Razr phone.

Tom Meredith, a Motorola board member as well as chief financial officer since March, said Zander still has directors' backing.

"The board is of the opinion that we have the right strategy and we have the right leadership team," he told The Associated Press.

Zander, who also is chairman, said he found "amazing" the recent speculation about the board looking for his successor and potentially considering the sale of some businesses. He said the board reviews succession planning regularly.

"Speculation has been going on on a lot of different things, and there are some things that just people aren't getting right out there," he said in a telephone interview, declining to comment on specifics. "I don't know where all these things get started."

The source of investors' concern is not hard to understand, with Motorola in the midst of its worst stretch since a string of six straight quarters in the red from 2000-02 and thought by analysts to have slipped beneath Samsung Electronics Co. to third place behind Nokia Corp. in the global handset market.

Mark Sue, an analyst for RBC Capital Markets, said the Schaumburg, Ill.-based company is "staring up a big mountain" before it gets back to where it needs to be.

"Motorola still has much work to do to fix mobile devices," he said in a note to investors. The company, he said, "will be in rebuilding-mode for the remainder of 2007."

Second-quarter results brought a handful of bright spots but mostly a slew of bad numbers for Motorola, which had warned last week that its results would fall short of expectations,

Few were as indicative of its deterioration and cutbacks as the total of 35.5 million handsets it shipped during the quarter — down a whopping 46 percent from the fourth quarter when the cell-phone business was still near its peak.

The net loss amounted to a penny per share, down from a profit of $1.38 billion, or 55 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. Net loss from continuing operations totaled $38 million, or 2 cents per share, and included charges of 4 cents per share from job cuts and insurance litigation.

Revenue fell 19 percent to $8.73 billion from $10.82 billion. Its mobile phone business led the way in the decline, accounting for less than half of sales at $4.27 billion, down 40 percent from a year ago.

The company's other two segments saw an increase in revenue.

Zander acknowledged that "there weren't many really new 'wow' products" in Motorola's portfolio in the first half of 2007.

"This has certainly been a very difficult year," he told analysts on a conference call.

He said several areas of improvement in the quarter provide the basis for a second-half financial pickup: a decline in inventory channels and gross margins, higher average selling price, a lower cost structure and the recent flurry of new products.

Greg Brown, the company's president and chief operating officer, said Motorola is "not hoping for the one-hit wonder" as it seeks to follow up on the Razr's phenomenal success. "We want a more balanced, predictable portfolio," he said in an interview.

Banc of America Securities analyst Tim Long said the company's profit margins are at their lowest level in recent history but appear to be bottoming out, along with market share. "It will take a few quarters for fundamentals to rebound," he said in a note to investors.

The company's other two segments besides cell phones saw an increase in revenue. But Philip Cusick of Bear Stearns said the better-than-expected $1.9 billion in sales from the enterprise mobility segment, which sells communications equipment to businesses, wasn't nearly enough to offset the problems in the handset business.

"We believe management is taking appropriate steps, but the problems are far steeper than many imagined," he wrote.

For the first six months of the year, the company lost $207 million, or 9 cents a share, compared with a profit of $2.07 billion, or 84 cents a share, in the first half of 2006. Revenue fell 11 percent to $18.2 billion from $20.5 billion.

Motorola shares rose 22 cents to $18.22 on Thursday. They are down 30 percent from last October.

Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L) said on Thursday it was concerned that the current model of iPhone mobile phones -- Apple Inc's (Nasdaq:AAPL - news) latest "killer" gadget -- did not operate on fast 3G networks.

Amid speculation that Apple, the innovative U.S. consumer electronics group, is close to handing a deal to Vodafone's rivals to bring iPhones to European shores, the mobile phone giant said only any deal needed to make sense for shareholders.

"It's clearly a good, software-driven device, but we're concerned about wideband area coverage so that 3G (third-generation) or HSDPA (upgraded 3G) connectivity with the iPhone is something that we look forward to.

"Every product, every alterative, every choice here has a price and we just have to be conscious of what it is that we're doing for our customers and our shareholders," Sarin told a conference call after the company posted strong quarterly numbers.

Analysts expected Vodafone to be in prime position to secure an exclusive, pan-European deal to sell iPhones, which have flown off the shelves in the United States, but warned that Apple was a tough negotiator and liked to dictate terms.

Apple, whose iPhones operate over slower 2.5 generation networks in the United States, is not expected to bring out a 3G version until March 2008, analysts say. And Vodafone has invested heavily in its 3G network and services.

IPhones, which combine Apple's hugely-popular iPod digital music player, a video player and Web browser into a sleek, touch screen device, went on sale in the U.S. in June to the delight of die-hard Apple fans.

Sarin said virtually every mobile company was having a conversation with Apple, but that he could not comment further on any potential decision or announcement.

Motorola posts quarterly loss, revenue down

Motorola Inc.posted its second straight quarterly loss on Thursday as a lack of advanced mobile phones cost the company market share and dropped it into third place in the industry behind Nokia (NOK1V.HE) and Samsung Electronics.

Motorola's results were in line with lowered expectations following the company's earnings warning last week. But it further disappointed some analysts by failing to give a revenue forecast for the third quarter.

"The big worry remains the top line, and market share in handsets, where they're ceding a ton," said Cowen & Co analyst Matthew Hoffman.

Motorola said it shipped 35.5 million mobile phones in the second quarter, giving it an estimated 13.5 percent share of the global market, down from about 17.5 percent in the first quarter. JPMorgan analyst Ehud Gelblum estimated Motorola's share at an even lower 12.8 percent for the second quarter.

The latest figures show that Samsung overtook Motorola as the industry No. 2, behind Nokia in the quarter.

After four straight disappointing quarters, Motorola Chief Executive Ed Zander has come under increasing pressure from shareholders, some of whom have called for his ouster.

But Chief Financial Officer Tom Meredith, who also sits on the Motorola board, told Reuters in an interview that the company was not looking for a successor and was confident in its leadership team.

Motorola posted a second-quarter loss from continuing operations of $38 million, or 2 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier profit of $1.35 billion, or 54 cents per share.

Including earnings from discontinued operations, Motorola's net loss was $28 million, or 1 cent per share.

Net sales fell 19 percent to $8.7 billion.

Hoffman said it was worrying that Motorola appeared to lose market share not only to Nokia, but to smaller rivals such as LG Electronics (066570.KS) and Sony Ericsson, a venture of Sony Corp (6758.T) and Ericsson (ERICb.ST).

In a conference call with analysts, CEO Zander said that Motorola was "doing the right things."

But he added, "Make no mistake about it, there is still a lot more to do."

OUTLOOK

Motorola repeated its expectation that the mobile devices unit, its biggest business, will not be profitable for the full year, but it said it expects the unit's results to improve in the second half.

It said it expects third-quarter earnings per share from continuing operations to be flat to slightly up from the second quarter, excluding items such as reorganization charges.

Cowen's Hoffman said Motorola's lack of revenue guidance could mean it expects more declines.

"It means they're prepared to continue to let (market) share decline, which is a longer-term concern," he said. "The main thing that will improve the long-term profitability of Motorola is an improvement of the handset portfolio."

Meredith said the lack of revenue guidance was due to the difficulty of predicting the highly competitive industry.

"Its just a question of prudence... given the volatility of the industry," Meredith said.

Zander said the company, which has been criticized for failing to develop a popular follow-up phone it its flagship Razr and for cutting prices of the Razr too quickly, needs new phones to help turn around the business.

He said Motorola was "working very hard on the 2008 portfolio" of mobile phones.

Motorola's mobile device unit sales fell 40 percent in the second quarter to $4.3 billion, and the unit posted a loss of $264 million, compared with operating earnings of $804 million a year earlier.

Motorola said its enterprise wireless unit, which sells equipment to corporate and government customers, posted a revenue increase of 42 percent, to $1.9 billion.

Sales for its television set-top box and network equipment business, which supplies to service providers, rose 9 percent to $2.6 billion.

Motorola said it has now sold 100 million versions of the Razr, which first came on the market in late 2004 and was still one of the company's best sellers in the quarter.

Motorola shares were up 30 cents to $18.30 in early afternoon trade on the New York Stock Exchange as some investors hoped the company's worst results were behind it. Analysts have also said that the shares, which have lost a third of their value since mid-October, have been trading recently on the value of the company's assets rather than its quarterly results.

LG Electronics posts 2Q profit

LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's largest maker of consumer appliances and a major producer of cell phone handsets, said Thursday it swung to a profit in the second quarter on strong sales of appliances and premium mobile phones.

The company, who brands include the Chocolate and Shine mobile phones, earned 385 billion won ($420 million) in the three months ended June 30 in contrast to a loss of 9.7 billion won a year ago.

Total sales rose 1.7 percent to 5.9 trillion won ($6.4 billion) from 5.80 trillion won a year ago. On a consolidated basis, which includes performance overseas subsidiaries, LG had sales of 10.4 trillion won ($11.3 billion), 12.6 percent higher than the previous year.

Handset sales rose 27 percent to 2.7 trillion won ($2.9 billion) from a year ago. LG shipped a record 19.1 million phones in the quarter for a total of 34.9 million in the first half.

LG said it sold 12 million of its Chocolate phones in the quarter and 2.5 million of the Shine. The company does not disclose sales figures for its Prada phone, produced in partnership with the Italian fashion brand.

The company, the world's fifth-biggest handset maker, said its operating profit margin of 11.6 percent in its cell phone division was an all-time high.

"There was pretty much growth in every segment," said Steve Oh, a technology analyst at Deutsche Bank Securities, referring to LG's handsets offered in wireless technologies CDMA, GSM and WCDMA.

CDMA, or code division multiple access, is used in the United States and South Korea. It is a rival standard to the dominant GSM, or global system for mobile communications, used widely in Europe. WCDMA, or wideband CDMA, is the most highly developed in terms of data transmission.

LG's Shine phone stood out in CDMA and GSM, Oh said, while the Chocolate was a hot seller in the WCDMA format.

The Prada had yet to have much of an impact on LG's bottom line, but would likely play a bigger role in the second half of the year, he said.

LG launched the Prada earlier this year. It features a no-button interface with the front covered by a touch-sensitive screen resembling the Apple iPhone.

Sales of home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines also gained, rising 21.4 percent on year to 3.6 trillion won ($3.9 billion).

Sales of digital displays, mostly televisions and computer monitors, declined 2.1 percent from the previous year to 2.7 trillion won ($2.9 billion).

The net profit was better than expected. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires forecast that the company would post a net profit of 236.5 billion won ($257.8 million).
